These awards were established in 2015 in honour of Arthur Wellesley Oakes. He was the Honorary Secretary of the private company which was responsible for the establishment of St John’s College and subsequently the foundation honorary bursar of the College. A. W Oakes joined the Light Horse as a trooper and left Australia in October 1914. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.
Award Value:
15% of base accommodation fees per recipient p.a.
Example: if base accommodation fees are $22,000 p.a. – 10% = $2,200, 15% = $3,300, 25% = $5,500 (subject to change annually)

About The Awards
How To Apply
- A recipient must be a full-time student at The University of Queensland
- A recipient must demonstrate academic excellence and have been accepted into an honours program at The University of Queensland
- A recipient must be in residence at St John’s College for the academic year in which the award is received
- A recipient must remain a full time student for the year in which the scholarship is made and make satisfactory progress towards the completion of her/his honours’ program
- A recipient must contribute the balance of the College fees.
- This award is offered annually
- Up to six awards may be made in any one year
- A recipient must demonstrate academic excellence and have been accepted into an honours program at The University of Queensland
- The award may be made to an applicant on an honours track provided s/he has successfully completed two years of undergraduate study with a high GPA
- It is offered as remission of College fees over two semesters of one academic year
- The award is for a period of one academic year only.
Application is not required for this award. Recipients are offered the award on the basis of their previous years’ academic results.
