The Michael Smith Award is named in honour of Michael Smith and particularly designed to support medical students who can demonstrate financial hardship.

Award Value:
$1,800 over 1 year ($900/semester)

Continuing/Returning Students: 4.00pm, Friday 24th November 2017
New/Fresher Students: 4.00pm, Friday 19th January 2018
Note: Students seeking entry to St John’s College are advised to submit their scholarship application at the same time as they apply for residence at the College as some awards may be offered early on a conditional basis.

Eligibility
  • A recipient must be able to demonstrate financial difficulties associated with attendance at The University of Queensland
  • A recipient must be a full-time, graduate student of The University of Queensland in the Medicine program or have been offered a place at The University of Queensland in that program
  • A recipient must not have already completed an Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) other than the degree program required as a pre-requisite for entry into The University of Queensland Medicine program
  • A recipient must remain a full-time student at The University of Queensland for the period of the award
  • A recipient must have been accepted into St John’s College and must be a resident of the College for the period of the award
  • A recipient must make satisfactory progress towards the completion of her/his degree program
  • A recipient must contribute the balance of the College fees
About The Awards
  • This award is designed to assist a full-time graduate student undertaking the Medicine program at The University of Queensland
  • It is offered on the basis of demonstrated financial difficulties associated with attending The University of Queensland
  • The amount of the award is currently $1,800
  • It is offered as remission of fees over two semesters of one academic year
  • The award will be reviewed annually and provided a recipient continues to be able to demonstrate financial hardship, it may be renewed
